Though he may be better known for his music, these days he says he makes more money selling paintings then he does playing music. “I’m still trying to bring fine art to music videos, it’s a matter of opinion as to whether that works or not,” he says.
He says that he has tried to combine his art with music by creating artistic music videos that can be viewed on his YouTube channel: Commander Cody Videos. “I consider myself to be a multimedia artist, sculpting, painting drawing, and editing is one side of it and the other side of it is the writing, playing and producing of music.” “A performance is gone as soon as it’s over and a piece of art remains after you’re done so they’re too opposite things but I like that,” he says. “We thought, ‘this isn’t going to work, but for some fluke reason it became a novelty hit,'” Frayne says. The record company chose it as the single. The song was “Hot Rod Lincoln” and it was featured on the band’s first album “Lost in the Ozone” which came out in 1971. I would waddle up from the piano and do my song and then sit down at the piano again.” We had one song that went real fast that I could sing and stay in tune. There are a lot of guys who had careers of talking songs. But since I’m from New York I could talk real fast and it turns out there’s a genre of song where you talk.
Then since I became Commander Cody people would say, ‘ay where’s the Commander? What does he do?’ At that the time I couldn’t sing a note. “So the band voted that I would actually have to become Commander Cody.
“Our name was like Marshall Tucker or Lynyrd Skynyrd and no one in those groups ever had to be Marshall Tucker or Lynyrd Skynyrd but for some bizarre reason somebody had to become Commander Cody,” Frayne recalls during a recent interview. When the country rock and blues band Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen formed in the late 1960s, there was no actual Commander Cody, but over time the band’s keyboard player George Frayne adopted the moniker, for no particular rhyme or reason.
